사람은 아무도 그 자체로 온전한 섬이 아니다. 모든 사람은 대륙의 한 조각,
본토의 일부이다
흙 한 덩이가 바닷물에 씻겨 가면, 유럽은 그만큼 작아진다.
그건 곶이 씻겨 나가도 마찬가지이고, 네 친구의 영지나
너 자신의 영지가 씻겨 나가도 마찬가지이다.
누구의 죽음이든 그것은 나를 줄어들게 하는 것이다.
왜냐하면 내가 인류에 속해 있기 때문이다.
그러니 누구를 위해서 저 조종(弔鐘)이 울리는지 알아보려고 사람을 보내지 마라
그 조종은 그대를 위하여 울리는 것이니.
